Famous Canadian Womens Rights Activists
In the perfect world, thirty-four women would be household names in this list. But long historical textbooks have focused on the exodus of older men, each one. In 2016, Canada's history decided to celebrate the centennial celebration of the first women to vote in Canada in 1916 - in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta - celebrating Canada's past amazing women. We identified thirty Canadian women and asked our readers to vote on who they thought was the "greatest."
To make our list, we recruited a panel of prominent Canadians - former Governor-General Adrian Clarkson. Selling authors are Charlotte Gray; historians Michelle Dagnas (Montreal University), Tina Lou (University of British Columbia) and John Sangster (Trent University). And author and English professor Aretha van Heurk (University of Calgary). At the same time, we knew the list was very short. Our visitors filled us with a flood of nominations for women not included in the list, and this year we would like to honor their suggestion by presenting a brief overview of the thirty-six featured women.
